My public art portfolio is up on my website (lunarnebula.com) and ArtStation. I have a few works up on Instagram and Cara back when it first popped up. I don’t really use DeviantArt, but they have a dedicated userbase and have been adding more options like the DreamUp AI. I remember Brad Colbow and others discussing various issues with sites like ArtStation, DeviantArt and AI.
My current opinion, if you want to start an online Art portfolio and want to know where to post: it depends. I’ve gotten spam messages asking for free art and such to Instagram and ArtStation. In that sense, they are probably the most frequented sites and best for a larger reach. Instagram especially. I, however, hated the posting process of Instagram from my phone since I normally work from my computer. It’s better now, but I still dislike Instagram from those annoying days. If you don’t like AI at all and want to keep it far away from your work, Cara is probably best, but it has a smaller user base. Making your own website honestly doesn’t feel very important these days. ArtStation feels the most like a professional portfolio builder and lets you ‘technically’ build a website from their service.
Honestly, Fiverr, or your own Ko-fi page might be a better way to showcase your art and get commissioned. I haven’t delved into those very deeply. I did set up a Ko-fi page, and it hasn’t done much.
My own website, I haven’t paid enough attention to visitors on my specific portfolio page. Honestly, I don’t think my website would be worth the price for just an art portfolio though. Not with so many good free options for showcasing work.
Of course, I’m inconsistent with posting art and don’t focus only on digital art, which definitely hurts my searchability on all platforms. Definitely a ‘grain of salt’ situation.
After trying all these out, I think the best choice overall for portfolio and ease of use is ArtStation. Cara is better, so far, if you’re really concerned about AI stealing your work. Instagram is probably your best bet if you want to reach as many people as your can.
I hope this helps you choose a platform, dear Patron!
